The video was recorded back when he was coming off of his first year of coaching at The University of San Diego. Due to his quarterback background and experience, he discussed his quarterback philosophies and mechanics that he deemed to be the most important. He has had so much experience in playing professionally and coaching successful quarterbacks in his coaching career, that as a quarterback coach myself, this was a great teaching tool for me to gain an advantage on specifics to go over with my quarterbacks at the high school level.
The coaching Harbaugh gave was mainly a technical skills focus. Harbaugh initially started with the mechanics necessary to playing the position. He discussed proper grip, throwing motion, bad habits, holding the ball in the drop and ultimately stating that the quarterback’s number one job is to protect the football (Harbaugh, 2005). Growing up, I’ve heard it all when it came to mechanics. It was refreshing to see a coach I look up to specify the key factors of throwing as a opposed to creating a robot at the quarterback position; He discussed only a few primary points to (more…)
